14A. Scottish Light

Aroma

  • malt aroma: low to medium, often w/ flavors of toasted breadcrumbles, lady fingers, and English biscuits.  
  • hop aroma: may have low traditional English hop 

Appearance

  • pale copper~very dark brown
  • clear
  • low to moderate creamy off-white head 

Flavor

  • malt flavor: entirely malt-focused, w/ flavor ranging from pale, bready with caramel overtones~rich-toast with roasted accents
  • hop flavor: no to low
  • hop bitterness: only to balance the malt
  • a subtle butterscotch character is acceptable; burnt sugars not
  • peat smoke is inappropriate

Mouthfeel

  • medium-low to medium body
  • low to moderate carbonation

Style comparison

  • w/ Wee heavy: similar but smaller
  • w/ Dark mild: similar but a little weaker in strength

Comment

malt-focused ales that gain the vast majority of their character from specialty malt, never the process. burning malt or wort sugars via 'kettle caramelization' is not traditional nor is blatantly(offensive) 'butterscotch' character.
