Comment and History

everyday beer. American versions can be a bit stronger, drier and more bitter. many modern examples use adjuncts which lessen the rich malt complexity. developed in Vienna in 1841, became popular in the mid-late 1800s. now nearly extinct in its area of origin, the style continues in Mexico.

7B. Altbier

Aroma

  • hop aroma: moderate to low, peppery, spicy, floral, herbal and perfumy character associated with Saazer-type hops

Appearance

  • light amber~deep copper
  • brilliant clarity
  • thick, creamy, long-lasting off-white head

  • no roasted malt flavors or harshness

  • medium to medium-high carbonation
  • astringency low to none

Style comparison

  • w/ International amber lagers: more bitter and malty
  • w/ California common: similar but not in ingredients

Comment and History

top-fermented lagered beer. the traditional style of beer from Dussedorf. "Alt" refers to the "old" style brewing(using top-fermenting yeast). predates the isolation of bottom-fermenting yeast strains.

7C. Kellerbier

Comments and History

young, unfiltered, unpasteurized versions of the traditional German beer styles, traditionally served on tap from the largering vessel. "Kellerbier" means "cellar beer". Originally, Kellerbier referred to any Lager beer being matured in the caves or cellars under the brewery. In the 19th century, Kellerbier was a strong, aged beer meant to last the summer. the term shifted to describing special beers that served young, directly from the cellar or lagering vessel.

Pale Kellerbier

  • hop aroma: moderately-low to moderately-high spicy, floral, or herbal 

Appearance

  • medium yellow to pale gold color
  • slight haze to moderately cloudy
  • creamy white head with good persistence

  • hop: low to moderately-high spicy, floral, or herbal 
  • hop bitterness: moderate
  • very low to moderate diacetyl, overwhelming diacetyl is not appropriate 

Mouthfeel

  • medium body
  • low to medium carbonation

  • w/ Munich Helles or German lagers: young, unfiltered, unpasteurized version

most pale Kellerbiers are young, unfiltered, unpasteurized versions of Munich Helles beer. modern adaptation from the traditional Franconian style, using Helles instead of Marzen. today, a popular summer season beer.

Amber Kellerbier

History

many breweries in Franconia would use some of this young beer during the summer months, for festivals such as the Annafest(est. 1840) in July in Forchheim.
